Even more unfortunate is that fluorescent lights contain a tiny amount of mercury which is a cumulative poison. Too much exposure will affect your brain, ultimately making you a bit dimmer. I think dumping fluorecent tubes in the trash is illegal in many areas as the mercury leaches from landfills and contaminates ground water.

My comunity has regular pickups for hazardous trash, like old fluorescent tubes, and the containers that your paints and resins come in. Ccheck when your community has something like this and plan your basement-cleaning efforts around these dates. Amazing how much shelfspace can be reclaimed when the old paint cans are trashed!
