Why not combine the systems! We are used to the decadic numbers with 10 as base. If we change to dodecadic numbers with 12 as base it would be easier with feet and inches. 1' 2" can then be written as 1.2 feet. We can use 1/12 of an inch and write that as 0.01 feet. In most cases that is accurate enough. Of course we need to invent two new figures for 10 and 11. Bigger problems have been solved.
