The finish on the stock that is pushed through the bandsaw is actually good. I use a good 6 tooth per inch blade, make sure it's sharp. I cut the stock about 1/64-1/32 over size and run the strips through the planer, so I can assure a constant thickness. I wouldn't worry about the how rough the surface is (with-in reason), it all gets sanded smooth during the fairing process.
