I'm thinking the same thing about beveling the edges. Sounds like the way to go. The ends sometimes like to fall in the hole though so I'm thinking I might go with gluing a strip at each end onto the strip being installed. That will stop the end from falling too far into the hole. Afterward I'll cut it off and sand it until it's gone.
