In other words, make sure your template always touches on the outside of the kayak. Not quite touching on the inside of the shear clamp is better then not quite touching on the outside. I didn't follow my own advice well enough and had some gaps I had to fill on the outside where he deck meets the side panels (I just did this last week on a CLC 17.
