Cabinet Scraper Question

What tasks do cabinet scrapers perform best when building kayaks? I am very pleased with my Surform for shaping my epoxied seams, but I suspect that a cabinet scraper would be useful for smoothing out fill coats just prior to varnishing. Is that what most of you used your cabinet scrapers for?
An associate of mine claims that a perfectly faired smooth hull surface is best achieved using a 2 foot board wrapped with sand paper attached to one side. Would a cabinet scraper work better than this?
PS (Mike, where in Tacoma did you get your cabinet scraper?)
Thanks,
Paul, Port Orchard
