Yes, they should be plenty strong to secure gear with. These are maple. You can see a smaller version at the lower left. It's epoxied directly to the hull, and there are three more in the bow area.

You could do as well or better stacking up small squares of plywood with a plywood "bridge" if you don't have any hardwood scraps around.
