I know very little about S on F's, but since you need the kayak for a certain purpose, then my advice might work for you.
try to go to a printing house that prints large prints, I mean really big! the size of a billboard! some of the billboards are printed on banner material, I'm not sure if that banner is a "real" canvas, or just one of it's cousins, but I believe it can work for you. It's the "zodiak" material.
If that printing house has a "large format digital Ink jet printer" than you can be sure they got lots of waste prints. I know it! I'm in the business. If they don't give it to you free, than pay their dumpster a night visit. you might have to sew or weld few pieces together.
good luck in that race
