Changing cockpit size

I want to change the cockpit size from the original fullsize template supplied with plans for my Expedition Single. I would like it to be 1" longer as well as 1" wider and still have the same shape as the original. What is the best way to accomplish my goal? I have thought of just making the recess and cockpit templates 1/2" larger all the way around but wonder if there is a better way. Any idea appreciated.
