Pete I use a band saw to cut all my stock. I first had some problems getting a consistent thickness, but with some practice and a few tricks it's become a reliable way to do it. I now cut them a 1/32 of an inch big, it would be safe to cut a 1/16 oversize at first and decrease as you get to know the saw ( it sounds silly, but it true). I found that using a fingerboard against the fence helps tremendously. Don't force the wood the through the blade, let the tool do it's job. If you have access to a planner you can plane them all to a universal thickness, while desirable it isn't necessary. All the highs and low will be taken care of with the planer and sander.
