Hi Peter,
You can do an excellent job of cutting strips on a bandsaw if you use the correct blade and the bandsaw is in tune. Precision work and fine finishes are possible.
I recently purchased a book by Mark Duginske called "Band Saw Handbook" which I highly recommend. (ISBN 0-8069-6398-0, $25.00 CNDN from Lee Valley Tools)
There are illustrations in the book that show a .015 inch thick strip, 6 inches high being cut off a piece of oak with a properly tuned saw.
The book devotes about 40 pages to blade selection and about 50 pages to alignment, adjustment and blade tensioning.
I have a brand new 14" bandsaw that I am tuning and what a difference there is from factory settings!
Tune first - cut later.
Enjoy your project.
Hank
