I was thinking about building a knee tube for my Coho. Like to put a water bottle or handheld VHF Radio within handy reach under the front deck.

My thoughts on fabricating a simple knee tube were:

1) Cut a foam core to shape then glass several layers of 6 oz cloth over it, then melt out the foam with solvent.

2) Make a shell out of 1/32 balsa with temporary formers, glass the outside, remove formers, glass the inside. Kind of like building a hull.

In either case the knee tube shell with wood core or without would be glassed in place under the deck.

Has anyone tried this to make a knee tube or other small compartment for their boat ?
