I am about to install the deck on my CLC Ches 18 and have a question about attachment at the very tip of the bow and stern. The plans call for leaving the shear clamp short at the bow and stern by 3 or 4 inches (to avoid having to make a perfect miter cut I suppose). Once the hull was assembled, I filled the tips with thickened epoxy, making a cardboard "dam" and the ends of the shear clamps and simply planed the epoxy along with the shears to the contour of the deck. My question is, can I nail the deck directly into the epoxy like the shear clamps, should I drill a pilot hole prior to nailing or would drilling and screwing be best? I will only need one nail in the bow and one in the stern to hold the deck in place.
