Scooter I teach an 8th. grade woodworking class in which we build a 9' kayak based on Grorge Putz's book. We cover the frame with # 10 canvas , and seal it with exterior oil base paint as a primer at least 2 coats. Then we paint them with exterior latex which we can get more colors in at least 3 coats sanded in between coats, they don't set in the water for days on end so it works well. If you want more durability use oil base all the way. Check the bulletin the has been mention as of late about the use of some very elastic roof paints, have not tryed them but will this year on a 14' boat I built to boat with the kids this spring. Hope to post pics. this spring of the kids boats. Hope this has helped
