Artic Tern - Recessed Deck Fittings

I just finished my unvarnished Artic Tern and am puzzling over potential deck fitting schemes and rigging designs. The article by Rick Rubil and Jim Gabriel(see link below) discusses installation of recessed deck fittings by:

1. Routing oblong recesses in wood blocks to be mounted under the deck.

2. Drilling holes through the blocks, then sliding brass pins into the holes.

3. Routing matching oblong holes in the deck.

4. Epoxying blocks in place under the deck.

Have any of you ever done this? I can't think of any drawbacks to this approach unless there is some disadvantage to having recessed deck fittings. Does anyone know of such a disadvantage? Also, what would be suitable dimensions for the blocks and how deep should the recesses be?
