Paul,

I, too, built a Tern, and I used recessed deck fittings that I purchased from Eric Schade (brother of Nick) at Shearwater Boats. You can buy plans for only $2, but I opted to just buy 8 of them pre-made by Eric for $5 each. He makes them in either mahogany or ash, with matching wood pins. They are plenty durable. I installed them before glassing the outside of the deck, but this is not necessary.
