Hi All,

Varnish seems to be the traditional finish for the kayaks, I have been using it for years. Why are polyurethane [urethanes, varathane] not used?

I have used Flecto brand [Watco in the US?] "Varathane Gloss 92" on my wooden bows with excellent results. This produce is recommended for exterior marine use [above the waterline, like varnish] and has UV inhibitors. The vendor claims that the finish will last twice as long as varnish. The finish is tough, resistant to chemicals and flexible [has to be to stay on a bow!]. I find it easier to apply than varnish and it is available in basic colors as well.

Is varnish used "out of habit"? Is it superior to the modern finishes?

Is there a chemical compatibility concern between epoxy the urethanes?

Are all the urethanes basically the same or will they all have to be tested?

I am considering using urethane on my kayaks this year and I would appreciate some comments if this is a good idea or not.
