My experience is that it take a roll or two of strapping tape to align the deck and hull for the best fit. This left a residue of glue that was easily removed from the hull and deck with some mineral spirits. I would rather do this clean up on a epoxy surface then to try and get this out of bare wood pores. My advice is to finish glassing the hull and use strips of extra cloth to finish off the outside seam. It is not a whole lot harder to feather the seam with a strip than the overlapping cloth method you are proposing.
