I think you're prob. right about the outside ones. They would be extremely difficult to stop drips etc from contaminating the edge. However if you masked the glass edge would that work? Say you laid on the glass overhanging the 1", Put on 1" or wider wide masking tape to cut the edge, Flipped it over and masked the underside and then laid it up, pull of the tape afterward and you've got an edge.

There's no doubt, for it to work the edges have to be clear and certainly at some scale there would be compromises.

But the possibility of having really clean seams is compelling.
