I tried Sharpie ultra fine point and also ball point pen, both directly on bare wood. The epoxy caused it to run and fade. I had great success with a picture printed on tissue paper as Ross described. I used an ink jet printer. Some of the ink bled through, but enough remained to be quite useful. I then cut it out and brushed some epoxy on the bare wood, layed the picture on it, then more epoxy over the top, and finally layed the glass over everything and wet it out. It worked great. For the signature, I waited until all the fill coats were cured and sanded, ready for varnish. At this point, I used the ultra fine black Sharpie to sign my work, then varnished over everything. Perfect. Hope this helps.--- John
