Hi, I'm a "lurker" here, trying to learn construction methods, etc. before I begin my stich & glue kayak. While at my favorite "builder's surplus" type store today, looking for some wood for the "sheer clamp" and for a paddle, I came across a bunch of clear pacific coast cypress, 7/8" x 5&1/4" x 7', for only $.85/foot ($6 per board). I never heard of pacific coast cypress in the NorthEast... it seems like real nice wood, cheaper than clear pine, and not as heavy as oak or mahogany, although a lot heavier than cedar. Anyone have any experience with this wood? It seems like it should work well for the sheer clamp, and for an Inuit style paddle (after I expoxy two pieces and carve it). Any comments? If I intend to build a "stripper" canoe or Kayak someday, should I scoop the lumber up now? It just seems very unusual to get ANY type of clear lumber today for $.85 a running foot. Thanks for any advice. John B.
