I was just reading this thread and couldn't help myself. I finished my Wee Lassie two last summer. I knew that I had to get a registration # for the boat. After a few false starts, this was the result: Had to go to the dept of transportation to get an inspection and Hull ID # (this one is supposed to be something that follows an outline from the coast guard)....sticker #1 on the right rear. Then, I had to go to the tag office to get a license for my new boat......stickers #2,3,4&5 (i.e. one red '99 boat license sticker on each side of the bow along with a 12 character registration number on each side of the bow). Then, to top it all off, I had to buy a city permit in order to use my boat on the three local water resovoirs (I live only a mile away from one of them). So.........now my lovely little wooden canoe has stickers on each of its ends....both port and starboard! Now.......anyone got any ideas as to how to put a few new coats of varnish on this thing? I'll just varnish over the Hull ID# (i guess???), since it cannot be removed. I can wait 'til june and take off the big red stickers and the city permit, as they will have to be renewed then. But I don't know how to deal with the ghastly 12 digit thing on each side of the bow.....I tried to get some of those vinyl numbers that looked fairly nice, but there is no such thing as nice looking numbers, when they are 3" tall!!. The ink/rice paper thing sounds good, but how can I get them to stick to the hull long enough to get some varnish over them? Seems just a tad bit rediculous doesn't it. I can understand this for motorized boats, but for something that is self propelled! Jeez!,..... and me as a paddler am probably less of a contributor to environmental pollution than those who fish and swim in our state lakes......I go out and paddle, then I go home. Any thing I brought leaves with me and I don't even get much more than wet feet! I can see the need for a standard form of hull ID for theft deterrance(but it should not be out in full view, in my opinion).....I can even tolerate a local city permit policy, on all boats, but the rest.............WELCOME TO OKLAHOMA, BOYS
