A wire brush wheel is a good idea. I've used a paint stripper wheel. It's a 4 inch diameter wheel about 3/4" wide made of an abrasive wire mesh - sold in home centers. That also works really nice in the drill. I also use my belt sander clamped upside down to make flatter and round edge parts like thigh braces.
