Dear Paul:

I agree in general with your postition. But like all generalizations, there are often exceptions that are worth consideration. The article URL below reports on the current discussion of easing of the existing ban on the sale of elephant ivory.

Poaching is bad, destruction of habitat is bad, and overpopulation is bad. But /by itself/, the sale of elephant ivory is not bad. But it may encourage any of these or other negative factors.

Ivory is certainly a lovely material, whether in the context of an elephant or some artistic endeavor, but mother of pearl sure seems more appropos the the context of kayaking.
