I am currently building a stitch and glue using 1/8" Lauan (sp?) from the local lumber yard. It cost $7.50 per 4x8 sheet. Certainly better than the $30 a sheet you see on the mail order places for "Marine Grade" plywood.

I just figured that if this thing is going to be fully encased in glass and epoxy, the difference in the quality of regular Lauan vs. marine grade just wasn't worth it. Of course, I'm the only one that's going to paddle my boat. If I was building to sell, then for the money I would get out of it, I would definately use the better wood. But that's just my opinion. I'm poor but still wanted a kayak, so I'm watching my budget closely.
