I use a small non stainless steel set screw in a nylon dowel, If I push the dowelto retract the skeg and hold the skeg it is possible for the dowel to slip a bit (maybe 1 cm). I use the same approach for the skeg end. Does not seem to be a problem there.

I used a little dab of urethane sealent on the end of a foot long tube and then laid a layer of glass over the tube to keep it all tight to the hull, there is a small amount of leakage where the tub enters the rear of the control slot but it is very little.
