I asked much the same question a couple weeks ago, and got some good advice. 1/4" braided nylon (I think) from West Marine. It's $.13 a foot,black, and streches when wet but you rig your boat with the rope pre wet so when it dry's it will be tight. any thing that doesn't strech when wet is usually hard to bend
