Hey tod. if I were u I would just put the foot braces straight thru the side of the boat with some flush fiting hardware. Maybe you are goig for an all wood look but. if u are painting the hull, "which I would recomend cuz it looks better" you could even fibreglass over the heads on the outside when you do the rest of the hull then paint over them. The reson I say to put them straight into the hull is that they would be muich lighter and stronger. in my yare I put yakimas straight thru and they work great. I also have me backband mounted with epoxy and it regularly falls out... don't know why but... oh well. well... if you disagree with me on any of this, u are probably normal ;) hope this helps DAVE
