Hi Jay, I built the whole paddle out of solid pieces. I started with gluing the loom up and cutting the pointed part with a taper jig on the tablesaw. I then glued up the blade pieces in two halves for each blade (a joint down the middle of the blade). I then cut the same taper on the blade to match the loom and glued it all up. The outside edges of the blade were tapered down to the loom with a block plane and then the ash was steam bent around the blank before I carved it.I used varnish for a finish. I'm currently working on a building page for how I built my paddles but have not yet finished it. You can see some other shots of my paddles on my paddle page, I have one with a hollow loom in progress.
