Why don't you temporarily hot glue (w/ little strips) the hatch in place. then stick the self stick weather stripping to the hatch profile, Place the shelf plastic in ctr of the hatch and make the 'channel' in one step. Pull the hatch and clean up.
That way you don't have to take it out, clean it up, reglue it back in and hope that it's strong and aligned.
