Whichever you like the looks of. The jig works both ways. It was actually designed to scarf through the 1/4" dimension, so that the joint would not be visible. But stacking two or three strips lets the air get a grip, and it works fine the other way. Just so long as your saw has the travel, it'll go as wide as you like.
