I found that the quality of foam brushes varies a great amount. Some brushes start flaking off immediatly while others flake only after extended use. I no longer buy the cheap plastic handled brushes at Harbor Freight, but go next door to Artco and get the quality wood handled ones.

I dont worry too much about runs and sags, as they come off quickly with a scraper.

I know that my kayaks won't look perfect in the building process, so while I'm building you can see the places where I've scraped the drips.
In the end the boat will be scraped and sanded before varnishing. The trick is to varnish without getting any runs, drips, or sags.
