I have never carried a kayak along with a canoe. With my 59" bars I should be able to have one canoe plus one kayak (on the side) up there when the time comes. I have looked into extending the bar with 1/4" carriage bolts and a 2x4 and then mount the required accessories to the 2x4.

I have always been taught to always transport your canoe on its gunwales. I am not sure if this is for structural reasons or (most likely) just the ease of transporting it/ tying it down on the flat.

Do you have Saris's gunwale mounts for the canoe? If you don't check them out a pack of 4 cost me I think $20. They're nice they have tie downs built in I use my ratchet style straps with them instead of the friction grip style that Saris sells.
