In Response To: Source for cedar in Los Angeles? (Ed Winterhalter)
I built a strip canoe from rough sawn 1" x 4" x 14' white cedar I purchased from Ganahl Lumber Co., 10742 Los Alamitos Blvd., Los Alamitos, CA 90720, (near 605 & 405 freeways) (562) 596-4475 on 4/17/99 for $1.881/board-foot.
The wood seemed to be two distinct colors, a light buff and a medium brown. If you want to control the colors you will either have to by large dimensioned rough lumber and rip it, or test each board with sanding and epoxying a small spot. I just randomly sorted the strips to get a true stripper appearence. On a kayak I would plan the color patterns. I don't have a source for the large dimensioned lumber.
