I only installed 8, 4 for each set of bungees just fore and aft of the cockpit. I believe I insatalled them at the locations that Pygmy proposed for the 'inchworms' and haven't had a problem hitting my knees on them from the backside or snagging knuckles on the topside (which was one of the reasons for installing them.)

One of the reasons for building the Outer Island that I'm now working on is that it has a smaller cockpit -- given that I use a narrow-bladed paddle held close to the deck, I was always dragging my knuckles on the very foreward part of the big Pygmy cockpit...
