Hi Larry,
Thanks for the info...maybe I had good luck with the planing because I used a "scary sharp" low angle block plane? And the whole paddle was made from yellow cedar. But I can imagine problems as a plane blade moves across a seam from yellow cedar to another adjacent wood.
Paul's suggestion about contrasting with ebony is a good one ... the jet-skiers will see me from a mile away, but the 12 meter yachts in the area might think I'm some sort of range marker and will try to make fast, tight turns off my bow.
