For next time: What if you had made a picture of your butterfly in all gray (like a shadow), then you epoxied it right next to the wood. After you've applied a few layers of fiberglass then epoxy the colored butterfly on. The colored butterfly would be added slightly off center from the shadow. Since it is slightly above the wood it would give the impression of it floating. Better try it out on a scrap first. The gray should be slightly transparent to let some of the wood show from underneath.
