: We can always count on Paul to give us a thorough analysis on any subject.
: Nice thought, by the way. I'm currently building a canvas skin boat. When
: you apply Snow Cote, Do you thin it out? Do you brush it on, roll or any
: other application you prefer? Any particular brand of polyurthane you
: recommend? Thank you for your time and effect to study and come up with a
: scientific deduction .
I just brushed it on with cheap foam brushes. Odor is not a problem. Respirators are not needed. It has low quantities of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which is one reason I'd suggest it for use with youth groups. It was such a small job that I didn't want ot use a roller. I put on three coats, un thinned. when used as a roof coating they apply this stuff with squeegees, which is probably fine for flat roofs, but I thought that putting on a heavy coat on the vertical sides of the boat was just inviting drips and runs. so I put on thinner coats.
The polyurethane I used was the house brand from the local E&B Marine (now West Marine). It is conisdered a "topsides" paint, probably because the "hull" paints all contain some ingredients for resisting barnacles. If you have the tendency to pull your boat out of the water before barnacles get heavily encrusted, I think you'll be OK without those additives.
