The type of battery you need is a "gel-cell" battery. They come in various voltages and amperages and are typically used in alarm systems. They are rechargable, and can be operated in any orientation. That is, they will still work as you roll!.

I would suggest that you stick with 12V systems, as the accessories (pumps and lights) should be cheaper.

I don't have any sources handy, but I'll see what I can find. I believe Radio Shack carries some for their alarm panels... Sources for 12V equipment, as well as charging and wiring information would include solar and renewable energy sites.
