Sea Kayaker mag did an article on this about 9 months ago. You can order old issues from their web site for not much more that the original cost.

I did a seach for rechargable batteries on the web and found hundreds of sites to order from. Also, found sound interesting flexible solar panals that could be used for recharging during an expedition to run GPS, VHS, pumps, etc... very light also.
