I used a french curve shaped cabinet scraper (constantine's has them - mail order or off the web (let me know if you need an item number). I also used a rubber sanding block (3M I think) with coarse paper - it was designed to hold sandpaper on the flat side and the rounded side fit your hand. I used it upside down. The curve that was made for hand comfort fit the inner hull curves of my canoe quite well. I tried a surform but I thought it scarred the wood too deeply.
