My poor baby. After a year of storage in the climate controlled basement on carpeted boat stands, my Guillemot Expedition Single has been evicted. We are building a 12x15ft addition off the back of the house which involves moving the bulkhead from its current east location to a south location. I am gaining a workshop under the addition but the kayak can’t negotiate the 90 degree turn from the old bulkhead and out the new. So there it sits behind my shed baking in the sun and providing target practice for birds who have scored several direct hits over the last few days.
To make matters worse I just completed a 19 mile race ( including 6 portages) on the Charles River two weeks ago. The finish is looking tired due to dings from getting in and out on rocky shores and scratches from repeatedly shoving my paddle in and out of the bungies while I portaged.
What’s a mother to do!!
We are now well into tree pollen season in Boston so refinishing outdoors isn’t an option. I need to rent a garage…and soon. I am a big believer that the boat is meant to be used and isn’t a piece of furniture (Ross and Joe’s boats aside) but it sure is hard to see it getting scratched and crapped on.
Do others have this same over protective maternal instincts I am experiencing over their boats. Hell I labored 300 hours on this thing my wife was only in labor with our two kids 10 hours combined. Now that I think about it, start to finish the boat took about 9 months to finish…..sounds familiar
