Grain Orientation on Laminated Paddles

I'm planning on building some laminated paddles as seen in Nick's book and Spidey's web page. I plan to use spruce for the shaft and spruce, walnut & ash for the blade.

Sould I buy vertical grain lumber or flat grain?

Does it matter?
