Hi Brian;
The orientation of the wood after you cut the blanks for the paddle turns out the same as when you cut the strips for (i.e.) the hull. If you start with flat sawn wood you'll end up with vertical grain along the paddle blade. That is how I did it. I'm not sure it matters all that much, but it seems as though it should be stronger. Perhaps Nick will expand on that.
