I made this rudder for a customer who wanted to steer while birdwatching through binoculars...without spoiling the lines of the boat with all that clap-trap usually associated with rudders.

I started by designing the hull with a large fixed skeg (like the old Nordkapps) to serve as the serface for the rudder.

I stripped and glassed the hull in the usual way. then i cut the rudder section out of the new hull ouch!!

I filled the rudder with hardwood and drilled it to accept a 1/2" brass rod as a rudder post.

I made a teflon bushing and mounted it in the hull while sealing the hole i made. I taped the rudder with the rudder post in place while the epoxy cured to make sure it would be aligned properly.

After finishing the boat, I made the steering gear which consisted of a stearing yoke, pullies, cable and steering peddles. I made the yoke to be installed from the rear hatch and the cables to be maintained from the same place.

It works great and should help in all conditions including big waves even though it will be out of the water at times.
