Hi Ralph;
Very pretty kayak - Where ya' been hiding it? . . . ;-)
The width at the beam is a point I have to consider also. The specs and forms for my GB are for 24", stable enough as a fishing platform for me. The actual external beam with strip thickness and the angle that is formed at the sheers measures 25-1/2", pretty wide. The depth is 12". I emailed the designer, and he said essentially to set the beam at whatever I would like. The depth will increase when I pull in the sides, but a high volume design generally is around 13" or better at the knee position, so mine will probably come out about right at a 24" beam.
The usual method is to use wood strips to set the width of both the hull and the deck at the station positions immediately after glassing the inside surfaces, before the epoxy sets up. Dale Frolander has some pix of this step on his site. I believe I just saw some other beam-setting pix, either on Ross's or Mike Hank's site. But it looks like the Spanish windlass accomplished the same goal.
Congrats on completion, it looks like a pro stripping job.
Best Regards, Spidey
