In Response To: Fraying ends of fiberglass cloth (David)

: Am getting closer to finishing my Arctic Tern, and haven’t applied the cloth
: to the deck yet, but after my experience glassing the inside of the hull,
: I am a little worried about fraying of the cloth ends. When I did the
: inside of the hull, the cloth ends at the overlap tended to fray and leave
: messy filaments of wetted fiberglass thread. That may be acceptable for
: the inside of the hull, where it will be covered by the Thermo-rest
: cushion, but not on the deck. I’m thinking that the problem comes from the
: sticky nylon roller picking up loose ends. Perhaps if I wet the deck in
: those areas first and then lay the cloth on, so that it wicks up epoxy and
: I don’t have to disturb it much, I could minimize this problem. Any
: thoughts or suggestions?

You will find that if you brush the edges of the cloth in one direction the edges don't pull off and fray and if you brush it the other direction they will unravel and be a pain in the butt. Figure out which direction they are fraying for the cut you make (it depends on the glass weave) and try to minimize brushing in that direction. Works pretty good.

You can also scrape the frayed pieces with a carbide paint scraper when they are semi dry or total dry to minimize sanding later on...
