I do just that, locking it to the rafters when in storage and to the roof rack when left on my car (at a campsite, when going into a store, etc.) I can loop the cable thru and still attach the cockpit cover. Most department stores carry bike cable-locks that have user-settable combinations, which are handy. I wish I had more trust in mankind...
