Could it be the other way around? Maybe the cedar was burning because it was dry -- the pine was fine because it was a bit wetter, which lubed the blade as it cut. If you have a friend nearby (maybe one of those neighbors that would rather not have to call the fire department), maybe they could put a light mist of water from a spray bottle on the blade as you cut. I'm no expert -- I cut my strips on a bandsaw...
