The blade to fence distance must increase toward the back of the blade. The increase is not much. If the seperation is less in the back of the blade, the cut off stock is pinched against the fence by the moving blade and can be flung back with amazing force. It has lead to severe injuries.

Always keep in mind the direction of forces. On a turning blade, forces are mostly down at the front but are up in the back. That up is the reason a band saw is much safer than a circular saw.
